The name of Kokand city means "beautiful place". City locates on the western part of Fergana valley, in the lower reaches of Sokh river and only in 25 kilometers from Syrdarya river. Areas around the city are  full of plentiful lands, but periodically  sandy barchans and gravels also appears. 

Today, Kokand city is surrounded by cotton fields, vineyards and other agricultural fields, which allow local people to grow up the richest harvest of vegetables, cotton and grapes. Step by step Kokand is transforming into the modern city, but still keeping its history sides with their charming ancients. 

Kokand was a capital of powerful Kokand state. Palace of great Khudoyar Khan ruler was built in 1871 and became his 7th residence. Palace was built according all architectural traditions of that time and had impressing outside beauty and inner interior. After reconstruction, palace structure is consist of 20 rooms which are united with 2 small inside yards.

Today Khan's palace is a museum where a lot of interesting artefacts and local crafts have been collected. The great poetess Nadira was a a favourite wife of Kokand's ruler Umar Khan. She ordered to build a memorial complex which united the several constructions and named it as Dakhama-I-Shakhan.

Umar Khan was buried in one of mausoleum tomb. He was known as wisdom and peaceful ruler.

Near the mausoleum was built Chalpak medrese. All spaces around were built by gardens and seeded with brightly plants. Lately, Dakhma-I-Shakhan complex became family tombs of the most rulers of Kokand.

The largest medrese of Kokand was built in 1799 and named as Narbuta-biya. It was completely different from another buildings by its full absence of decorating elements, which were specific for all buildings of that time. Such kind of medrese design and layout of its inner rooms reminds buildings of ancient Bukhara city. Only entrance gates were decorated with fancy wood carvings which were typically for Middle Asia architecture. Nowadays, over 80 students from whole Fergana valley are study at Nurbiya-biya medrese.

Modari-Khan mausoleum is another monument have been built by order of Nodira poetess. It was built on the place where her mother-in-law and mother of Umar Khan were buried. Modari-Khan mausoleum means “Mother of Khan". The place became a tomb of Nodira and all women of Khan's dynasty.

Kokand is not only the city with well saved historical monuments but place where a lot of talented people were born. Here was born founder of Uzbek literature, poet and famous dramatist Khamza Khakimzade Niyazy. His small house was divided on male and female parts. It is opened for visitors from 1959. Here you can meet Khamsa's works and know life story of people's protector and just talented person.

Khudjra museum of great poet Mukimy is located in the one of buildings of Miyen Khazrat medrese which was built in 17th century. Aminkhudja Mukimy had been worked and tought there for a long time. People are still admiring his works. Museum exposition is open for all visitors and consist of 3 parts: his works, life and literature creature  of 19th century.
