Nukus is the capital of autonomy of Republic of Karakalpakstan and locates in the northwest of country, in 800 km from Tashkent.
City locates on the right branch of Amudarya river in the central part of Karakalpakstan and surrounded by three deserts. Comparing with other ancient cities of Uzbekistan, Nukus is only 80 years old. But archeologists proved that on 3-4th century BC there was Shurchi city - defended post of the ancient Khoresm state.
Since Uzbekistan became an Independent country, Nukus city have grown and enlarged from small city to developed administrative center with its own enterprises, institutions and good transportation infrastructure.

Nearby Khodzjeli city, close to the ancient Mizdakhkan necropolis of Khoresm state, there is Guyar-kala fortress (4 century bc - 4 century ac). This oldest fortress belongs to the non Islamic times, when people addicted to the Fire. The title of Guyar-kala means “fortress of unbelievers” and probably could also be met in the another places. Here, the Arabic conquerors had faced with the most epic resistance of “unbelievers” who did not want to apply Islamic religion. The main aim of the fortress was to protect the northern part of Khoresm. In spite of passed centuries and ruthless nature powers, there are few still existing wattle and daubed walls, watch towers. The total square of fortress is 200x450 meters.
When you stay near these buildings you will feel astonishment and admiration upon these ancient but still alive places! Despite of worsening ecological situation in the Aral region, Nukus city does not stop surprising travelers with a variety of interesting places.
