Rishtan is a small city on the south of Fergana Valley and locates in the Fergana region. 

Rishtan city has a rich and ancient history. It was founded on the one of ways of Great Silk Road in the 2nd century bc. But the first written reminders about Rishtan dated 9th century. From the earliest times, city was well known as a big center of glazed ceramic manufacturing and perennial trees growing. Rishtan is one of the most oldest settlements and cultural centers of Fergana Valley. City locates on the right coast of Sikh river, in the foothills of Altay mountains.

Archeological discoveries in the different cultural lays are testifying the fact that by the end of the 2nd millennium bc, there were flourishing settlements in Rishtan place. Archeologists found rampart of ancient fortress wall. Found objects are dated 2-1 centuries ac. 

During period before Arabic invasion, Rishtan had a territory over 200 hectares. At that time, city was surrounded by protection walls. There were 2 fortresses inside - Kalayi-Poyen and Kalayi-Bolo.

Rishtan is famous by its ability to save ancient secrets of traditional oriental crafts: carpets and ceramics manufacturing. 

As Rishtan was located on the way of Great Silk Road, local ceramics items attracted sellers from different regions. On the whole way, from Near-East to China, Rishtan’s ceramics was well known and had a big demand. Later, there was famous Kalandarkhana - the meeting point of traveling philosopher-dervishes. The great Islamic teacher of 12th century, Barkhanutdin Marginani was born in Rishtan.
